Managing Principal
Mel Choy, as one of Media 5’s founding principals, has been a respected member of the architecture profession for over 30 years, specializing in large mixed-use developments, hotels, government buildings, and educational projects. His project experience includes large housing developments like the One Archer Lane high-rise condominium in Honolulu and Ho'olei Luxury condominiums in Wailea, Maui. Mel's affordable housing experience is exemplified by Honuakaha housing in Kakaako, Ala Wai Garden Plaza, and the Kaloko Transitional Housing Project in Kona. As Managing Principal, Mel is has also overseen landmark projects in Hawaii, including the Hilo Judiciary Center and 'Imiloa Astronomy Center.
Mel is active professionally as a member of the American Institute of Architects and the Royal Australian Institute of Architects. As a member of the Board of Directors for Mid-Pacific Institute, he is well versed in the planning challenges of independent schools in Hawaii. Mel also serves on the Board of Directors of Goodwill Industries Hawaii. Mel is also a past board member of the Bishop Museum and the Hawaii Maritime Center.
Outside of the office, Mel is an active member of the Hawaii Shotokan Karate as a third degree black belt. He is also a sailing aficionado, having sailed for many years as a member of Waikiki and Kaneohe Yacht Clubs.
